Lane hated giving up such a perfect parking space, but planning their investigation required privacy. Squeals from Lane’s chair protested him leaning backward to face his partner, who had taken a seat across the room behind his own desk.

“First step, we follow the money, see where this paper trail leads. Emile’s given us a skeleton; let’s put some meat on these bones.”

Jack’s nod was slight, a mere dip of the head, as he tilted his head to catch the sultry breeze coming through the windows. “It’s a twisty path through this maze of masks and merriment. We gotta tread lightly. The wrong question asked to the right face could draw attention we don’t want.”

“I’ve never been one for tiptoeing, Jack. You know that.”

“What do you make of this ‘Jester’ character?”

“I’m not dismissing it out-of-hand. I know it sounds ridiculous, but it fits with Mardi Gras. As a Krewe name, there’s probably a dozen Jesters out there somewhere.”

“Let’s talk about it over lunch.”
